Find Axatana in Mammon

The Axatana route begins at Castigator's Keep Beacon. The weapon is in the Ruins of Mammon, in a hidden region within Vestige of Infinity. From the mountain top, the documented path turns down the left-hand slope, then reaches a drop into an enemy-filled lower area.

Merrick in Marrow Keep sells an overworld map that marks Axatana's location for 1,100 Coins. Buying the map can stop you from searching the wrong part of Mammon, but it does not remove the route itself. Take a loadout that survives the path before you plan to experiment with the weapon.

This is not a starter-area pickup. Clear enough of Mammon that Castigator's Keep and its surrounding routes are comfortable, then take the detour. If the lower drop leaves you low on healing, reset at the Beacon and come back with a familiar weapon instead of trying to learn Axatana mid-run.

Use the katana and axe forms

Axatana moves between katana and axe forms. The katana side is the fast option and is strong enough that it can carry a large share of normal combat by itself. The axe form gives a heavier alternative when you want a different attack shape or a more committed hit.

The form change has a slight delay. Do not press the switch in the middle of an enemy's expected retaliation unless you have already made space. Change form before an opening, then use the appropriate string instead of treating the weapon as a button that solves a timing problem.

Its strength is flexibility, not immunity to risk. If a boss only leaves very short windows, katana pressure is usually safer. When the enemy is locked down or recovering, the axe form has more room to justify its commitment.

Build around its strongest stones

Duality Stone is a major Axatana pairing because it causes each attack to hit twice. It is found in Ravaged Tomb, east of Nochtean Gate Beacon. That effect favors a player who can stay on a target and repeat a clean string rather than taking one isolated hit before retreating.

Hexapod Core gives Axatana a rapid slicing special move. It is obtained after defeating Hexapod. The two stones together make the weapon more dangerous during a confirmed opening, but they do not change the need to recognize whether a boss can interrupt the next attack.

A weapon setup should still leave room for a useful sidearm. Caged Hystrix gives frequent chip damage and stagger pressure, while Forgotten Crossbow gives dependable ranged damage. Use the sidearm when a target forces distance instead of chasing it with an unsafe axe-form attack.

Where Axatana fits in a loadout

Axatana sits in S tier because it covers both quick and heavy needs. That ranking is earned by its combination of forms, not because every player will like switching. A player who wants a pure fast weapon can still prefer Black Needle or Axe and Dagger.

Use the weapon against several ordinary encounters before deciding on its form habits. Try katana attacks against mobile enemies, test the axe during longer recoveries, and pay attention to which transform moments get punished. The usable rhythm matters more than the label attached to the weapon.

If you are building around quick pressure, add a sidearm that keeps attacks coming at range. If you are using the axe more often, preserve enough space for its recovery and keep a fast option ready for bad openings. The weapon is strongest when its two forms are answers to different situations rather than two attacks used at random.

Axatana is especially good when you decide the form before an engagement. Use katana pressure to claim small openings and save the heavier axe option for a target that is clearly recovering or contained. The small transformation delay is manageable when it is planned and punishing when it becomes a reaction to danger.

The weapon has a natural progression path because its noted stones are found on distinct routes. Duality Stone is in Ravaged Tomb east of Nochtean Gate Beacon, while Hexapod Core comes from defeating Hexapod. You do not need both before using Axatana, but each gives the weapon a specific reason to revisit it after the base moveset is familiar.

If the weapon does not feel safe yet, do not assume the tier label is wrong or that you must use it anyway. Go back to a reliable weapon for the route, then return at a Beacon and practice its spacing on ordinary enemies. The strength of a flexible weapon only appears when the player can make deliberate choices with both forms.

Axatana also benefits from keeping its job narrow during a new boss. Use the katana form as the default safe answer, then switch only after you recognize a recovery long enough for the axe. That approach gives you the weapon's flexibility without asking you to gamble on every transformation.

Keep a ranged sidearm ready when neither form can safely close the distance. Caged Hystrix and Forgotten Crossbow both give you a way to preserve pressure while waiting for a safer melee turn. This also prevents a form-change delay from becoming a forced chase during longer boss phases. Return to katana form before closing distance when the next opening is likely to be short.
