Encounter role
Treat Tar Golem as a prologue skill check rather than a mandatory progression wall. You can continue when the encounter resolves normally, while an achievement run asks you to stay in the Shell and finish the boss.
Decide which goal you are attempting before the fight. A normal story attempt and a zero-health achievement attempt do not have the same risk or reset cost.
Twin-axe pressure
Tar Golem attacks with two large flaming axes and leaves few openings during long combinations. Stay near its side, avoid committing during the moving swings, and wait for the axes to become planted before attacking.
Some attacks cannot be guarded safely. Keep enough space to read the next swing and avoid turning one greedy punish into a lost Shell.
Finishing the achievement attempt
The achievement condition is stricter than merely reaching the end of the encounter: Tar Golem must reach zero health while you remain in the Shell. Preserve defensive options for the final part of the health bar instead of spending everything early.
A ranged option can help close the last gap when approaching with melee would be unsafe. The exact number of shots depends on the weapon, upgrades, and current balance.
